For starters, there is no license fee.  Usually, when you buy a telephone system the license costs will be anywhere between 30% to 60%, according to the studies.

You can get the software by downloading it from the website. So the cost you incur is really for the hardware and any installation services. The hardware is either an appliance or a server (or a PC)  and relevant modem cards, if you choose standard telephone lines or ISDN. The service is for configuring and setting up.

What is special about this IP PABX?

Asterisk comes with feature sets (including video conferencing) that is found only in very expensive, top of the range IP PABX products.

Further, this is a open source IP PABX prodcut. That means you own the code for the software and you don’t have to wait for a vendor to decide when and how you want to integrate this application with any of your other business applications.

Some people confuse open source with freeware. Freeware software is something people do in their spare time and giveaway. However, for all the successful open source products, there is a always a community of programmers behind it that constantly develops and supports the product.

So, this product is special because it has exceptional features (it has won several awards too), has a huge community of developers behind it, you own the code and it is free of licensing costs.

Some customers use a high end PC as the Asterisk server. We may be able to get away with this, if the load is not too high.

There are several flexibilities available. For instance, if you need a cordless phone and an IP cordless phone is not available you can uses a ATA such as Linksys PAP2 and use the standard cordless instead of say and Asteriks IP Phone such as  Polycom IP Phone. We have one customer who uses different Music On Hold for different phone queueus.

This is probably the best small business IP phone system. Not expensive and does a great job.
